It all started with what was supposed to be my dream journalism opportunity.
I applied for a summer fellowship at The Indianapolis Star, convinced that my undergrad years studying journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill would land me a role in the newsroom reporting stories. That was the plan!
But when I got the call, they had something else in mind…
Instead of assigning me to cover stories, they asked me to manage the newspaper’s social media pages.
My first reaction?
Wait…what?!
This was especially ironic because I had spent most of college boycotting social media. I didn’t even have a Facebook page until senior year. While everyone else was posting, I was focused on writing articles and studying journalism.
Yet there I was—sitting in the newsroom hub, telling stories in an entirely different way. Before long, my fellow summer fellows “hijacked” the newspaper’s social media manager and tweeted live in a fun, yet harmless “tweet off!”
What started as a detour from my original plan ended up becoming the foundation of my independent career!
Since then, I’ve earned a master’s degree in communications from Georgetown University and served as a marketing consultant helping organizations clarify their message, strengthen their marketing strategies, and reach the audiences that matter most.
While I lead strategy and client management as the firm’s CEO and Lead Marketing Strategist, I also collaborate with a trusted network of creative and communications professionals when projects call for additional expertise. This flexible model allows EJSham Consulting to provide both high-level strategy and hands-on execution, depending on each client’s needs. Our clients span multiple industries—including finance, education, media, faith-based organizations, and women’s health—each with unique stories and goals.
Today, I bring together my background in journalism, marketing strategy, storytelling, and digital engagement to help organizations communicate with clarity and purpose.
